Antique Shopping - A Local Favorite

Southport, a captivating, coastal town, offers numerous shops, antiques store and historic sites. Along the west side of the Cape Fear River's mouth, Southport and Oak Island reachable by ferry and scenic highway. Both Rand McNally and Kiplinger rank the area around Southport and Oak Island as one of the most desirable places in the United States to retire. Southport's live oak-lined streets, charming architecture, quaint shops, most notably an abundance of antiques shops, has a major allure to shoppers and historians alike.

The city, steeped in history, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. So it's no wonder they house over 75 antique dealers and 15 shops in the Southport/Oak Island area. Many local antique store owners say that Southport became such a Mecca for antiques not only because of the rich history, but because the increasing foot traffic created many businesses and that spread. When others realized an increasing need in the antique market, more and more stores began appearing. Northrup Antiques Mall, one of the oldest antique stores in Southport, still has local antiques that range from the 1890's to 1900's, and with one of the largest varieties of antiques, it's one of the most popular shops in the area.

The picturesque charm of Southport and the quiet of Oak Island's small, coastal community conceal the area's growth. Much of that growth is a reflection of the growing number of retail businesses in the area. Many of the shops are lined along the cobblestone streets of Southport's beautiful historic district and are a great way to spend a day walking throughout the area. Most people park along the street and wander along the area's waterfront and two main streets, Howe and Moore.

The possibilities of great finds are endless with the many gift shops, jewelry and clothing stores as well as art galleries, a maritime museum and great restaurants. For a local favorite, try Blue Crab Blue, housed near the Oak Island Bridge in a boat builder's cottage. One-of-a-kind gifts such as stained glass, handcrafted jewelry and pottery fill the store. The owner supports the community of local and regional artists as well as customers, hand picking each piece that goes in the shop. A favorite for every grandparent and parent, Good Ship Lollipop offers tons of adorable children's accessories and clothes. From an astronaut raincoat to Tooth Fairy pillows and Christening outfits there are many unique ideas and gifts.

At the Olde Southport Village shops, you will find a wonderful and wide range of shops located in refurbished antique buildings. Clothing, gifts, food and furniture, there is something for everyone. The Pink Palace Tea Room and Gift Shoppe provide a romantic cottage style atmosphere with vintage linens, tea pots and furniture. Locals and tourists alike love the Brunswick Candy Company where lollipop trees and fresh made sweet treats named after the area, such as Oak Island Snappers, please everyone's palate. The Village General Store is always a must with antiques, homemade jams and jellies as well as fun gift ideas.
